Fantastic Response to our Report on Safety and Risk

Ocean Hyway Cluster published recently a report about safety and risks regarding hydrogen and ammonia infrastructure. The report was written by Olav Hansen in Lloyds and can be downloaded here. The report has received a lot of attention including 90 comments after Teknisk Ukeblad wrote an article about the report. The text below is Ocean Hyway Cluster’s answer to the Teknisk Ukeblad comments.

International and national decisions is taken to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by 2030 and 2050. The transport sector must take its share of the emission cuts. Zero emission propulsion solutions will be part of the solutions. Pure hydrogen (green or blue) is one of the most relevant alternatives.

Hydrogen has various properties which are both positive and negative in relation to use as an energy carrier. The same applies to natural gas, gasoline, diesel and ammonia. Risk has always been and will always be part of our daily lives. All forms of transport involve risks, including walking and cycling. The safest solutions are developed by analyzing all risk aspects and taking measures to reduce or eliminate them.

If global CO2 emissions are not reduced, this will lead to a major risk in the form of global warming, rising sea levels, increasing levels of extreme weather and potentially uncontrollable migration and international conflicts. The risk factors associated with the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier are perceived as relatively small compared to the above.

As the Norwegian maritime hydrogen cluster, Ocean Hyway Cluster represents world-leading industrial and R&D players. These operators take consider all technical risk aspects and develop the best solutions for hydrogen-based maritime propulsion systems. Our aim is to ensure that Norwegian industry takes a leading role in the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier in the maritime sector.
