Provaris Energy has joined the cluster

We are glad to announce that Provaris Energy has joined Ocean Hyway Cluster in the journey towards decarbonizing the maritime industry.

Provaris Energy is an Australian company providing global experience to provide a simple and energy efficient supply chain for green hydrogen. In addition to their offices in Sydney, Perth and Calgary, they recently established its Norwegian corporate office in Oslo. We had a nice chat with their CTO, Per Røed.

Provaris Energy has a clear and ambitious plan for the future:

Provaris has developed an innovative compressed shipping solution. Compression offers a simple and energy efficient supply chain for green hydrogen, and we have developed a patented cargo containment / ship design solution that allows for transportation of hydrogen in a compressed state. We have spent the last 3 years developing the ship design for two classes of GH2 carriers, with advanced Class approval status, and being “early movers”, we are able to offer hydrogen shipping and storage assets on water from 2026 onwards, Per Røed says.

They are involved in several projects where they collaborate with other actors in the hydrogen value chain. Per Røed highlights two of their projects:

In addition to our shipping / midstream hydrogen transport solutions, Provaris is involved in upstream / hydrogen export projects, including our Tiwi H2 project in the Northern Territory in Australia where we can export 100,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen. Our recent MOU announced in the summer of 2022 with Total Eren is validation the technical and commercial validation for the use of compressed H2 as an alternative to liquid and chemical (organic) carriers.

Collaboration with other key hydrogen actors

About a month ago, Provaris signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Total Eren, a French-based renewable energy power producer. Provaris and Total Eren will work together on the identification and assessment of green hydrogen projects currently developed by Total Eren that can utilize Provaris’ GH2 Carriers for bulk transport. Compressed hydrogen will be transported to markets that needs imported volumes. The actors have already identified project opportunities for further technical and commercial feasibility to be progressed.

Joining the cluster was a strategic move going forward:

Provaris established its European corporate office in Oslo in August 2022. The office was established due to the recent developments in the European hydrogen market and the increasing interest and requirements for H2 transportation solutions. The European office allows Provaris to be closer to potential customers in the region (producers and off-takers). Norway has hydrogen on their agenda and compression is widely accepted as a means for production and distribution. As such, we have seen significant interest from various Norwegian entities throughout 2022 and a decision was thus made to establish our European office in Oslo (Provaris Norway AS). Becoming a member of the cluster gives us greater visibility to potential partners and customers and allows us to build relationships with other members as part of our project and corporate development, he continues.
