Norwegian National Budget 2021 Launched Today – Hydrogen Update
In June this year the Norwegian government's Hydrogen strategy was released. The Government has now started working on a Hydrogen Road Map. Today the Government launched the 2021 National Budget. What does the budget say about hydrogen? Look below for the highlights.
Industry Growth and Innovation
Support schemes in Innovation Norway and the export financing schemes are continued at a high level. NOK 100 million is proposed for investment in infrastructure and market development for hydrogen and NOK 75 million to promote Norwegian exports.
Projects aiming to use hydrogen as an energy carrier in several sectors and areas of use shall be given priority, including the establishment of supply chains and a hub for hydrogen.
Zero Emission Transportation
Norway has an ambitious policy for reducing emissions in the transport sector, especially for the transition to electric cars and low-emission solutions for ferry transport.
Other emission reductions in the transport sector will have to be taken into account in commercial transport on land and at sea, as well as in the construction sector. For the heavier part of commercial transport and for construction machinery, there are few zero-emission solutions, and significant technology development is required before electricity or hydrogen will be competitive with current fossil technology.
Access to Sustainable Energy
Norway is well situated to take part in a future hydrogen market. We have key expertise and experience from the renewable sector, the petroleum sector, industry and the maritime sector, as well as large gas resources and increased potential for renewable energy. Furthermore, the Norwegian continental shelf can potentially function as storage for CO2. Technology maturity and high costs are key barriers to hydrogen technology, and the government therefore has a goal of increasing the number of pilot and demonstration projects in Norway.
