Looking Back: Ida’s Year at OHC

Over the past year, I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to contribute to Ocean Hyway Cluster’s work through a part-time student position. As a student in the integrated master's program in energy engineering at the University of Bergen, I was excited to apply my background in renewable energy and hydrogen in the cluster. I have been working one day a week and have had the flexibility to adjust the work schedule to accommodate my studies. During my time at OHC I have been inspired by the team, their goals, ambitions, and drive to accelerate the hydrogen industry. Working with OHC has allowed me to contribute to sharing knowledge and shaping the Norwegian hydrogen sector.

My responsibilities in OHC have primarily involved managing the membership platform, working with the databases for hydrogen and ammonia infrastructure, as well as low-carbon vessels. The work has consisted of updating databases and interactive maps, tracking projects and vessels in Norway and Scandinavia. Furthermore, I have been communicating with our members regarding their technologies and projects, aiming to share knowledge about markets, players, and technology amongst the cluster members.

Working in OHC has given me a broader understanding of the hydrogen value chain and the Norwegian hydrogen market. It has also motivated me to stay up-to-date and informed aboutthe hydrogen sector. Through communication with members, tracking projects, creating informative presentations, and assisting in gathering information from reports, I have gained valuable insights and drawn inspiration for future work.

Over the past year, I have been working on my master's thesis in energy engineering, focusing on optimizing hydrogen production efficiency by utilizing alternative working fluids in electrolysis. In my thesis work, I have studied biodegradable fluids, researching whether there are alternative, sustainable working fluids possible for heat transfer enhancement in electrolysis to increase production efficiency. I find this field incredibly exciting, and my time at OHC has only strengthened my motivation to work with green hydrogen, while also providing me with a broader understanding of the hydrogen industry and the role of hydrogen in Norway's efforts to reduce its emissions.

I am highly grateful for my time in OHC and the knowledge I have gained. Their ambitions and core values have been inspiring, and I will bring them with me in future work. Finishing my master's now in June, I am taking a gap year to travel and sail the world. I will be back by summer 2026, looking for new work opportunities in the hydrogen industry.
