Awarded grant to deliver hydrogen to ferries and cruise ships in the Geirangerfjord

Press release Oslo, December 13, 2019

Hyon AS (“Hyon”) has, together with partners, been awarded Euro 3,7 million under the PILOT-E funding scheme for the development and realization of hydrogen production and bunkering for ferries/cruise ships in the Norwegian world heritage fjord “Geirangerfjorden”.

The project includes development of a production facility based on surplus hydropower that will deliver hydrogen to ferries and cruise ships, as well as to other mobility applications. The ambition is to achieve zero-emission vessel operation in the pristine Geirangerfjord, a World Heritage Fjord in Norway known to become zero-emission zone latest by 2026.

The consortium is headed by Flakk Gruppen with hydrogen storage supplier Hexagon Composites, hydrogen solutions integrator HYON, hydro power supplier TAFJORD, ship designer and yard Fiskerstrand, safety and risk management provider Gexcon, SINTEF research institute and the local municipality of Stranda as key partners.

“We’re honoured and proud to receive the award, and to announce our participation in this innovative project together with our competent partners”, says Tomas Tronstad, Managing Director of HYON. “The project will contribute to the greater use of hydrogen and demonstrate the broad spectre of opportunities that comes with renewable electrolyses based hydrogen.”

“With this, we add very interesting solutions to HYON's and our Owner’s well-established portfolio of hydrogen products.”, says Arild Eiken, Marine Technology Director of HYON.

The PILOT-E scheme provides funding for Norwegian trade and industry and has been launched as a collaboration between the Norwegian Research Council, Innovation Norway and Enova. Final agreements for the grant will be signed early 2020, upon which the project will commence immediately thereafter.

The scope of the development contracts covers the complete hydrogen infrastructure systems where HYON will use Hexagon as supplier of the hydrogen pressurised storage tanks and Nel Hydrogen as supplier of the on-shore hydrogen production and fuelling solutions. HYON will perform integration of hydrogen systems into turnkey solutions according to the needs of the project and the customer.
